How to ensure WORK STRESS is reduced at Christmas time

The stress you put yourself under at work will be different to the stress you place on yourself in your home environment.  It will depend on where you work and what you do as to how much stress you put yourself under.

How do you know you are getting stressed? What should you look out for?

Symptom

·         Fatigue

·         Anxiety

·         Overwhelmed

·         Lack of work satisfaction

·         Increased sick days

·         Insomnia

·         Depression

Stressors

·         Excessive overtime

·         Increased workload

·         Unrealistic deadlines

·         Insufficient skills for the job

·         Lack of resources

·         Harassment

·         Discrimination

·         Poor relationships skills

These symptoms and stressors are serious enough at any time of the year, put them with extra pressures you may place on yourself at Christmas time and you could be an explosion just waiting to happen.

At Christmas time you may feel pressured to attend the work Christmas party; this could be a disaster especially if you are suffering from any form of stress.  Many a person has told their boss what they think of them after a couple of beers.  This is not a wise choice.  Therefore the consumption of alcohol or drugs and the work party do not mix.

Work Christmas parties are well known for highlighting possible romance in the workplace, if there is a chance of infidelity this is generally when it will occur.

What could you do differently?

Work place stress can be reduced or eliminated by organising and planning the tasks you need to complete to attain realistic deadlines.

·         Firstly I would recommend you structure your To Do List and prioritise your tasks in order of importance.

·         Plan your day to avoid procrastination

·         Allow yourself time to mentally and physically unwind each day.

·         Try not to take your work home.

·         If you have conflict with someone at work, discuss with a professional how you can relieve this problem.

·         Do more of the things you enjoy doing while at work.

·         Do the things that are going to give you the greatest rewards.

·         Make the choice to be happy while you are at work.

If you can’t do any of these things to reduce your stress then I suggest you rethink where you work and what you do.  Perhaps this job is not suited to you.  You could use the Christmas break to think about what you want to do.

What about YOU!  What does Christmas mean to you? How do you cope with work stress?
